ANALYSIS PARALYSIS

Asanti Grisolmn • May 12, 2022

Rather than empowering us to make better decisions, our near-endless desire for and access to information often leads to increased fear of making the wrong decision, which leads to us spinning our wheels in an inevitable eternal torment of analysis, all the while getting nowhere on our critical projects.

Analysis Paralysis is the inability to act or make a decision as a result of overthinking available options or likely consequences. The stress from overthinking causes our mind to shift concentration away from the current action and toward escape through inaction.

When it comes to getting things done, delaying action while over-analyzing facts certainly does not help. Regrettably, this is only the beginning of the doom and gloom. Analysis paralysis has a considerably higher impact on productivity and well-being than simply wasted time, according to studies in psychology and neuroscience.

SYMPTOMS OF ANALYSIS PARALYSIS

You've probably felt paralyzed by indecision at some point in your life. Even if it isn't a life or death situation, analytical paralysis can have a detrimental impact on the overall quality of your life. As a result, it's critical to recognize the signs so that you aren’t living a life of lackluster.

  • EXCESSIVE ATTEMPT TO BE PERFECT: Perfectionism manifests itself as an all-or-nothing attitude. While it's fine to establish lofty objectives, perhaps the excitement of going even higher once they've been achieved motivates people to take action, rather than setting lofty goals and spending time contemplating how to achieve them.

  • DISTRUST OF YOUR GUTS: Every decision we make, from whether or not to set our alarms to what we'll wear for the day to what we'll eat for breakfast, is based on a finite quantity of willpower. Willpower or guts is similar to a muscle; it does not return to its original form when stretched; thus, it develops with use. This distrust is a pointer to the lack of use of the willpower through inaction.

  • YOU FIND IT DIFFICULT TO BE SPONTANEOUS: Being a free spirit and doing anything you want sounds amazing, but any passing thought that might interest you will be analyzed and replayed until acting on that impulse becomes impossible. You fantasize about implausible scenarios and situations that could only occur under particular conditions, and you consider every angle and possibility. While this may keep you from being spontaneous, it is also a sting of analysis paralysis.

We all know fully well that no one enjoys being wrong. What one does first when confronted with a situation they don't know how to handle tells a lot about their Analysis Paralysis quotient.
