THE ART OF SELF DISCIPLINE

Asanti Grisolmn and Gloria Orogun • May 12, 2022

We've all experienced procrastination or the inability to act because we're waiting for the right moment. We have seen in many ways how mesmerized our routines become when we let our ability to complete tasks be dictated by how we feel. When individuals discuss how to improve their lives, self-discipline is constantly mentioned. It may be described as the formation of new habits, the control of emotions and behaviors, and the purposeful concentration of one's attention on aspirations.

Forbes describes this more succinctly as Self-discipline being the bridge between goals defined and goals achieved.

It has become a very important skill set that inhibits one  from being immersed by others to the point of being carried away by the rush of the ordinary, especially in today's age of social media, with unlimited diversions and an ever-increasing speed of life. Self-discipline can assuredly be developed by anyone, and we’ve got  a few tips outlined for you.

  • Recognize That You Are Responsible For Your Self-Discipline: We discover genuine strength in the awareness that we only have true control over our minds, not outside circumstances, as Marcus Aurelius correctly recognized. When we take responsibility, it focuses our efforts in the proper direction rather than entrusting the decision to engage in behaviors and activities that are inconsistent with our values and our authentic expression of self. We become more resolute, refusing to be swayed by our emotions or inclinations.

  • Develop A Day-to-Day Routine: It's a good idea to create your non-negotiables, which may include simple things like when you go to bed or when you exercise. Developing a routine can be extremely beneficial, especially if you're just getting started with self-discipline. It's simpler to overcome opposition when you have a defined time to complete a specified task. Because you don't have to wait till you "feel like it" to accomplish something—it simply occurs now.

  • Set Clear Goals And Have An Execution Plan: People easily make the mistake of creating objectives for themselves that are nearly impossible to fulfill. To increase self-discipline, you must learn to set realistic goals and milestones for long-term objectives. It will allow you to track your progress and motivate you to achieve objectives more efficiently.

When we recognize that we can design our thoughts and actions to accomplish the desired result, we become less susceptible to temptation and are generally happier with our lives. Practice the art of self discipline and you’ll eventually make it a lifestyle and success will remain inevitable.
