It's not always evident the way we should choose, and making decisions may be difficult. Some of the decisions we must make are insignificant, but others have the potential to influence the course of our lives and those of our families. When an unforeseen scenario arises, we are compelled to make a decision, and we must rely on our knowledge to make the best decision possible.
The Cambridge dictionary defines Discernment as the ability to judge people and things well.
Discernment can have numerous meanings. In Christianity, Discernment can refer to the process of discovering God's desire in a circumstance or for one's life, or it can refer to determining the real character of a thing, such as determining if a thing is good or bad, or it can even transcend the confining construct of dualism.
I'm sure we all face a major personal challenge of choice every once in a while. It may be terrifying, thrilling, draining, and exhilarating all at once. We can attempt to avoid it, but decision making is one of those basic human experiences that we all have to go through every now and again. Perhaps your persistence tells you to tough it out on a difficult job, while your recklessness wants to smash a three-hole puncher into your boss's dumb face.
Discernment is a "knowing" that might seem akin to an intuition at times—hence the saying “when in doubt use discernment.”
When you look at Discernment in religious writings, you'll see that it's always linked to spiritual growth, to a growing awareness of higher consciousness and conviction in the God you serve. Discernment is no simple feat. Trying to separate our selfish wants from our noble ones might be difficult, but it is something that can be learned with time. We gain self-awareness as a result, and we may be certain that we are responding to God's direction in our lives: that we are becoming our genuine, or most authentic self selves.
Discernment also assists us in making the best choices for the best reasons. More than that, it provides us with the confidence to stay to the commitments we make. You can also benefit from Discernment. Many times, answers to your deepest questions will come on a silver platter through people you know, and being tuned into God will give you more confidence in knowing that you will make the right decision, despite the obvious and insufficient accessible information.
