THE TRUTH BEHIND YOUR ADDICTIONS

Asanti Grisolmn • May 12, 2022

Addictions are the easiest ways to resort to when faced with challenging circumstances. People face addictions for several reasons, ranging from stress, abuse, vulnerability, and exposure due to lack of parental care, and association. Then the ability of people to properly let go of said addictions now becomes the problem. Thus all they’ve done is create a new problem for themselves on top of the problems they already have.

Addiction starts when the use of certain substances such as drugs or alcohol becomes prolonged to the point where the use becomes compulsive. People remain addicted because they claim to feel good whenever they practice those addictive behaviours. It’s no secret that addictions are indeed a form of toxic codependency that allows it’s dependents to temporarily forget ongoing issues such as complicated relationships, financial instability or low self-esteem. So what is the real addiction? Is it to the drug itself, or is it to the temporary elusiveness of negative thought processes it provides?

Addictions are often sustained by the addicted due to the lack of contentment with their reality. The habit serves as a temporary escape from their reality thus the addiction is not to the drug itself but rather to the illusionary escape the substance provides. The substance alters the state of the mind and creates a temporary moment of pleasure because their real lives aren’t pleasurable. It’s the lack of being fulfilled in their everyday lives that drives substance abusers away from sobriety.

Here are some tips that may help or one quit addictions and begin a life of sobriety.

  • Letting Go Of Your Addictions: Addictions create a temporary illusion that gives the addicted an escape from their present state. This illusion often arises in individuals who are not content with their current reality. To eliminate your addictions, the first step is accepting your reality and recognizing that you are responsible for what becomes of it. Acknowledge that your addiction does not permanently eliminate your problems but rather creates an additional problem on top of the ones you already wish you didn’t have. Awaken to the discovery that your bad 'reality' can be re-created at any moment in time by nobody else but yourself. Create a better one for you. Know what you want out of life, believe that it’s achievable as take the necessary baby steps toward what’s already been mentally achieved.

  • Be Grateful: As earlier said, the lack of contentment with present reality leads bine into addictions. Learn to express gratitude for what you already have because the world can show you someone who is truly living without. There are people around the world who pray everyday to have the possessions or opportunities that you have. To do this, make a list of people or things you possess and show appreciation for them. Avoid acting like the victim and focus on things that bring happiness into your life. This helps to eliminate that no good victim mentality and hasten the recovery process.

  • Improve Focus: To properly let go of addictions, individuals should improve focus by letting go of their past and putting more effort into the present to secure a great future. Letting go of one's past helps to enhance guidance on how to change your present actions to abundance and fruition to your future. Avoid beating yourself for past mistakes and readily grow steadily.

  • Avoid Comparisons: Comparing yourself to others can cause a sudden relapse and result in a drawback in progress you’ve made thus far. Rather appreciate your progress, no matter how small, and strive to achieve more.

  • Set Realistic Goals: Set realistic goals you can achieve within a specific time frame and work towards that goal. Setting goals helps to improve your attitude towards what to expect and improves your attitude towards life after you’ve repetitively achieved them. You’ll become more motivated and optimistic and believe in yourself a little bit more each time you’ve reached a milestone.

What you never want to do is invite a new problem amidst all the others you have yet to overcome. It’s a step backwards in the wrong direction when we really want to be taking steps forward in the right one. Join the race towards life fulfillment. Don’t create new hurdles. Proceed with stealth, determination and wisdom and you’ll win that race.
